Weakened by scurvy and marooned on a deserted island, Bering and many of his sailors were unable to move even to defend themselves. The helpless sailors were visited most nights by creatures such as this fox, who bit their ears, noses and other extremities. Bering was in such excrutiating pain that he asked to be buried up to his neck in the dirt. This, of course, did not stop the foxes....

A few of the sailors survived the winter on the island and, when the weather cleared, built a raft on which they sailed to safety.
